BASE welcomes supported business funding announcement

BASE welcomes the announcement on continued funding for individuals working within protected places in supported businesses. We welcome the increased certainty around funding so that these businesses can plan more sustainably for the future and continue to develop employment opportunities for people who have a disability.

Supported Employment focuses on open employment within the labour market but supported businesses offer another option for individuals. Many people prefer the additional support offered within the businesses, most of which have a diverse workforce. Many of the employees within protected places have worked within their supported business for decades and enjoy good terms & conditions and pension entitlements. They have previously been promised work for life.

Supported businesses are becoming increasingly innovative and recognise their role in supporting individuals into open employment. They offer a supportive, paid environment in which individuals can pick up vocational skills within an intermediate labour market. This approach will be underpinned by a new quality assurance mark that is currently being developed.

This announcement offers assurance in the short to medium term and we look forward to working with DWP to ensure a long-term future for the businesses and their thousands of employees.
