The Work and Pensions Committee has published its first inquiry report on DWP's preparation for changes in the world of work. The report calls on the Government to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy on how it will prepare for changes in the world of work brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

They say that technological changes in the workplace risk having an uneven impact on different groups of workers and the Government must be more proactive in planning ahead to avoid people being excluded from jobs and worker protections.

While the Committee concludes that it is not likely that new technology will lead to mass unemployment, it warns that the creation of new jobs and loss of others will be uneven across sectors and across different groups of workers.

The Government must ensure that any changes do not exacerbate existing inequalities, with younger people, disabled people, women, and people from some ethnic minorities particularly at risk of missing out on jobs.

NFER has published a research report that examines the impact of the apprenticeships reforms on SMEs and on young people, against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Putting Apprenticeships to Work for Young People also considers to what extent the apprenticeship programme needs to be refocused in order to ensure that − as we continue to emerge from the pandemic − the apprenticeship system is working to support young people and SMEs.

It's interesting that there is no mention of disability or the Supported Apprenticeship flexibilities within the report.
