This paper was published in the Journal of Mental Health Training, Education and Practice and was co-authored by Mark Bertram of SLAM Mental Health NHS Trust.

The purpose of this paper is to explore what helped seven people in contact with secondary mental health services achieve their vocational goals, such as: employment, education, training and volunteering.

The authors used the practice of co-operative inquiry – staff and peer supporters co-designed an evaluation of vocational and peer support work with service users.

Access to Work is provided where someone needs support or adaptations beyond the reasonable adjustments which an employer is legally obliged to provide under the Equality Act.

The Work and Pensions Committee has said that when the current Work Programme and Work Choice contracts are replaced in 2017, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must more effectively focus its contracted employment programmes (welfare-to-work) on unemployed people with challenging problems such as drug and alcohol addiction, illiteracy and innumeracy, homelessness and very weak employment history. This report includes the recommendation that a separate specialist programme for disabled people is maintained.
