Every secondary school in the country has been given access to a free tool to measure the effectiveness of their careers education and guidance against a series of nationally recognised benchmarks to give young people the best start in the world of work.

Ofsted has published a report reporting on the findings from the first year of local area inspections carried out by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) into the effectiveness of local areas in fulfilling their new duties in the ‘Special educational needs and disability (SEND) code of practice: 0 to 25 years’ (the Code of Practice). 

The framework for these inspections sets out how Ofsted and CQC jointly inspect the local area’s effectiveness in three main aspects:

The Department for Education has made changes to the regular minimum English and maths requirements needed to complete an apprenticeship for people with a learning difficulty or disability who have, or previously had, an Education, Health and Care plan, a Statement of Special Educational Needs or a Learning Difficulty Assessment.  These changes will allow more people to access apprenticeships. Edward Timpson, Minister for Vulnerable Children and Families, has announced a £215 million funding boost to transform the lives of thousands of children with special educational needs and disabilities, by increasing school capacity and making it easier for them to access good school places.

Every local council’s allocation is at least £500,000 to enable them to expand and improve their special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision, with more than half receiving at least £1 million.
