The report from the Children's Commissioner for Wales highlights many issues young people face as they become adults and points out the limited choices and funding available. Transition services, where they exist, vary greatly across Wales and frequently fail because they do not place young people at the centre of the planning process. Being able to make the right choices depends on the availability of the right information and too often this simply doesn't exist.

Preparing for Adulthood has produced a quick guide to education funding for people aged 16 - 25 who have special educational needs and/or a disability.

This guide provides information on the way the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and, in some cases, local authorities will calculate and allocate funding to institutions who provide education to young people with SEND. The guide provides a summary of the structure of the funding system and provides a quick reference guide; further information is available from the links in the document. 

The Department for Education has published a SEND newsletter and is requesting information about the delivery of supported internships.

The Education Committee has announced an inquiry into support for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The Committee is inviting written evidence on the following by 14 June 2018: 

Children and Families Minister, Nadhim Zahawi, has written to local authorities to give information about the transfer of funding for two Section 31 grants relating to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).  This includes the Preparation for Employment Grant 2018.  The letter has been sent to all local authority Chief Executives, Directors of Children’s Services, Lead Members for Children and Chief Finance Officers in all local authorities.

Every secondary school in the country has been given access to a free tool to measure the effectiveness of their careers education and guidance against a series of nationally recognised benchmarks to give young people the best start in the world of work.

The Careers & Enterprise Company, in partnership with The Gatsby Foundation, have launched Compass, a new, free online tool for schools to evaluate and monitor improvements in their careers education against eight nationally recognised benchmarks.

The Department for Education has made changes to the regular minimum English and maths requirements needed to complete an apprenticeship for people with a learning difficulty or disability who have, or previously had, an Education, Health and Care plan, a Statement of Special Educational Needs or a Learning Difficulty Assessment.  These changes will allow more people to access apprenticeships. A short guidance document explaining the changes is attached.
