The Work and Pensions Committee has published a report on its inquiry into the Disability Employment Gap. BASE gave oral evidence to the committee and we welcome its findings.

Youth Employment UK has now created a Kickstart Guide for Employers to help support and advise them to create a good quality Kickstart Programme for the Candidate.

This resource has been created by Youth Employment UK to support employers and gateway organisations looking to create Kickstart Programmes. We have consulted with the young people in our network to explore what a good Kickstart Programme would look like to them and have embedded their views into this guidance.

Leonard Cheshire has published an excellent report based on the findings from a survey of disabled workers and employers. The survey found that in the UK, 71% of disabled people who were employed in March 2020 have found that their work has been impacted by the pandemic. In Scotland this increases to 82%, in Wales 69% and in Northern Ireland 58%. The Locked Out of the Labour Market report produces a number of recommendations for Government and BASE fully supports them. The recommendations link well with the proposals in the Access to Jobs campaign.

In association with the Bloomfield Trust, the Employment and Enterprise team at National Autistic Society (NAS) has launched a new employment programme, Autism at Work. The programme supports employers to promote job opportunities to autistic job seekers. It then supports applicants through the recruitment process and successful candidates to prepare for and succeed in their role.

BASE member Ambitious About Autism has announced a pioneering partnership with Santander Universities UK and 17 high profile higher education institutions. Employers can join the programme for free to access autistic talent, training and support as well as salary costs fully funded by Santander Universities UK.

Professionals can also register their autistic clients who have attended one of the partner universities. To find out eligibility for this unique and ground-breaking programme for autistic students and graduates, register your interest.

The Open University's new report,  'Access to Apprenticeships', has found that, while two thirds of employers consider hiring candidates with disabilities for entry-level roles is an important priority for them, many feel 'unequipped' to do so - with financial barriers and lack of training meaning they aren't able to offer the correct provisions for disabled workers.
