Only 6% of people leaving prison receive support to find competitive work. Funded by J Paul Getty Jnr Charitable Trust, The Henry Smith Charity, and Garfield Weston Foundation, this project worked with prison leavers from eight West Midland prisons.

This project trialled Individual Placement and Support (IPS) with a population it had not been tested on before: people with mental health problems leaving prison.

The report from the Children's Commissioner for Wales highlights many issues young people face as they become adults and points out the limited choices and funding available. Transition services, where they exist, vary greatly across Wales and frequently fail because they do not place young people at the centre of the planning process. The Department for Education has published a research report that evaluates the Traineeships programme.

The evaluation explored the views and experiences of:

  •   Year Two Survey of Trainees: 2,153 trainees who commenced a traineeship programme between August 2014 and July 2015.

  •   Trainee’s Follow Up Survey: 416 trainees who were interviewed as part of the Year One evaluation programme and then interviewed again between 18-30 months after the traineeship (December 2015 and January 2016).

A study of over 1000 unemployed adults by Tarani Chandola, Professor of Medical Sociology at The University of Manchester, compared health and stress levels of those remaining unemployed and different quality jobs. When given the right supports and training, a new study from USA suggests that nearly all young people with autism who qualify for supported employment can learn to excel on the job.

9 out of 10 transition-age youths with autism who participated in an intensive job training program were working part-time earning at least minimum wage three months after graduating high school. What’s more, 87% were still working after 12 months.
