Supported internships were one of a number of initiatives proposed in the 2011 special educational needs (SEN) green paper ‘Support and aspiration: a new approach to special educational needs and disability’. A supported internship programme provides a structured study programme for students between 16 and 24 with a learning difficulty assessment (LDA). The programme includes on-the-job training, backed by expert job coaches and complementary college-based learning including access to relevant qualifications, where appropriate.

DWP has published the evaluation of the Right to Control initiative. Right to Control, a new rights-based approach to support and services for disabled people, was started in 2010 . It brings together a wide range of cross- government funding streams, namely Access to Work, Adult Social Care, Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs), the Independent Living Fund (ILF), Supporting People and Work Choice, with a view to streamlining the customer experience across these funding streams.

This evaluation was commissioned at the start of the Employment Advisor (EA) pilot in 2009 and its aim was to test the proposition that the provision of integrated mental health and employment advice services would reduce the incidence of health related job loss, increase the likelihood of an earlier return to work following health related absence, and reduce the number of people accessing out of work benefits. The report shows that it did.

The Canadian Government has published a report that identifies best employment practices and records the success stories of people with disabilities. Rethinking disAbility in the Private Sector is the report of the Panel on Labour Market Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities that was formed earlier this year. The panel was created to research on people with disabilities in the workplace to: * Focus on the best practices to giving people with disabilities employment opportunities * Explain how both individuals and businesses benefit from hiring people with disabilities

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills has published an occasional paper on the business case for equality and diversity. The report considers the evidence for the business case for equality and diversity in private sector organisations. The aim is not to make the business case, but to assess the current evidence from academic journals and some key practitioner sources. Key Findings: * Studies appear to have found evidence that firms have reaped business benefits from equality & diversity, but not all firms in all contexts at all times.

EU Study on supported employment

The European Commission has published a study of supported employment services across Europe. The study mapped the use of Supported Employment in 30 countries; undertaking an in-depth study of six selected countries to look at policy recommendations. It also produced a compendium of good practices and directory of supporting services.
