This webinar is one of a series organised by North Dakota’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and Nasjonalt kompetansemiljø om Utviklingshemming(NAKU). 

The topic for the webinar was International Law and Policy, specifically how it supports inclusive employment opportunities. It was facilitated by Brent Askvig, Professor of Special Education and Executive Director of Minot State University and Karl Elling Ellingsen, Director of NAKU.

It featured presentations from Rick Kane (CEO of Disability Employment Australia), Huw Davies (CEO of BASE), and Susie Rutkowski (Co-Director and Educational Specialist for Project SEARCH).

The National Autistic Society has published a report about employment. A 2016 survey has found that just 16% of people with an autism condition are in full-time paid employment. This compares to 15% in 2007.  The NAS has launched a campaign, including a video, report and petition, to change things.

Inclusive Films have produced a short film highlighting the business case for employing workers who have a disability. Employers from a variety of organisations talk about their experiences and the various ways that being open to disabled talent has been good for business.

The films are project based and often involve streaming the films on websites and producing DVDs for distribution. It’s Working in Dudley: this film tells the story of people with learning disabilities making a real success of paid work. Self Employment for People with Learning Disabilities: shows people working for themselves and succeeding with a variety of different business types.
