1. Inclusive Recruitment Practices

What are employers doing, if anything, to create fair opportunities for ex-offenders to compete for jobs within their organisations in the UK?

What information or support would help employers to make the decision to remove the criminal conviction declaration tick-box from their job application forms?

The Camden Society’s fulfilment and distribution social enterprise, Mailout, has 787 square feet of warehouse space available to rent in Central London from August 2018. The Camden Society is looking for an ethically minded partner who would like to take advantage of a great storage and work space in Kentish Town and who is excited by the prospect of offering opportunities to people they support.

From late autumn 2018, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plans to release regular experimental statistics about the Work and Health Programme (WHP). These will provide information about the number of:

NDTi has announced the appointment of Paul Marshall as the new Chief Executive of the National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi).


Paul has nearly 20 years’ experience in leading social change and joins NDTi from Liverty, one of the country’s largest social housing providers, where he was Director of Community Engagement. He previously worked in local government and housing in the North East, driving inclusion, community benefit, service transformation and decentralsation.

BASE welcomes the announcement on continued funding for individuals working within protected places in supported businesses. We welcome the increased certainty around funding so that these businesses can plan more sustainably for the future and continue to develop employment opportunities for people who have a disability. 

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Esther McVey, has announced increased funding to support businesses that provide extra employment support for disabled people with the greatest barriers to work.

When the Work Choice employment programme ends in March 2019, ongoing support will be offered to individuals working in Supported Businesses through specially designed new elements of the government’s Access to Work scheme.

National Archives are seeking to recruit 8 trainees for participating archive sites. The Bridging the Digital Gap initiative is a Heritage Lottery funded training programme aimed at bringing technical people into the UK archives workforce. The 15-month placements start in October 2018 and offer a rewarding, practical alternative to the first year of university study.

The Government’s Work and Health Unit, a joint unit funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and Department of Health and Social Care, has launched the Challenge Fund, a new time-limited source of funding aimed at testing new or promising approaches to helping people experiencing mental health or musculoskeletal (MSK) issues to stay in work.  The Challenge Fund is run by Rocket Science on behalf of the government.

Enable have been successful at the Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards (England & Scotland) taking home the ‘Breaking Down Barriers Award’ for their Wolverhampton Disability Employment Service. The team had originally been nominated for the award by Tom Denham, Head of Provider Services; ASC at Wolverhampton City Council and they had managed to take the lead over 11 other nominees in order to win. Enable received the award for their ongoing efforts to break down barriers to employment for people with disabilities.

A Croydon Council officer who works to support people with disabilities into work has reached the final of the National Diversity Awards.

Nana Marfo, who works as an employment support officer in the Gateway division, has been named a finalist in the category of Positive Role Model Award – Disability out of over 24,550 nominations.
