This toolkit, created under the Fulfilling Potential banner, shows what data has been published about disability and how that data can be used. This is a toolkit created for Disabled Peoples User Led Organisations (DPULOs), other small organisations and charities. Supported internships were one of a number of initiatives proposed in the 2011 special educational needs (SEN) green paper ‘Support and aspiration: a new approach to special educational needs and disability’. A supported internship programme provides a structured study programme for students between 16 and 24 with a learning difficulty assessment (LDA). The programme includes on-the-job training, backed by expert job coaches and complementary college-based learning including access to relevant qualifications, where appropriate.

The government provides financial support to disabled people and those with health conditions who are unable to work. Many are able to work, but are prevented from doing so because of:

  • false understanding of what individuals are capable of
  • employment support that does not meet people’s needs
  • an inflexible benefits system

The government is already working hard to tackle these issues, but is determined to do even more to help disabled people and those with health conditions to get into, stay in and progress in work.

The Merlin Standard is a standard of behaviour which DWP prime providers are expected to adhere to in their relationship with their subcontractors. It is designed to encourage excellence in supply chain management by DWP prime providers. This ensures the fair treatment of sub-contractors and development of healthy high performing supply chains. The development of the Merlin Standard responded directly to concerns raised by DWP providers, especially those not operating as prime contractors, around potential unfair treatment within supply chains.
